The international effort to treat HIV/AIDS is at a critical point - four million people across the developing world are on antiretroviral treatment, but nearly six million more don’t have the life-saving treatment they need.
Extending treatment to all people in need, while ensuring access to newer, better drugs and ending the neglect of paediatric AIDS, will require much more determination and political will.
To ensure that funds stretch as far as possible to meet the needs, there are a number of actions that governments can undertake to contain the cost of drugs while ensuring quality treatment for the long term.
